📌 What Happened?

On 12 June 2025, Air India Flight AI171 crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner lost altitude and collided with the BJ Medical College hostel building just moments after becoming airborne.

The plane was carrying 242 people – including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. The crash caused a massive explosion and fire that resulted in devastation both onboard and on the ground.

💥 Casualties & Survivors

  • Total Fatalities: 260
  • ➡️ Onboard Deaths: 241
  • ➡️ Ground Deaths: 19
  • Injured: 60+ ground injuries reported
  • Survivor: Only one – a British Indian passenger in seat 11A, now recovering in the hospital

📋 DNA Identification & Victim Support

All 260 bodies were identified using DNA profiling. The last body was released on 27 June to the family of Anil Khimani, a 32-year-old Gujarat-based tech consultant.

The government provided counseling and financial support to the victim families. Many were flown in from the UK, Canada, and other countries to claim remains.

🔍 Investigation & Possible Causes

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of India is leading the investigation. Black box data was recovered and is under analysis. Several possibilities are being explored:

  • 🛠️ Engine thrust failure or imbalance
  • 🧭 Landing gear or flap configuration issues
  • 🔥 High temperature (~40°C) reducing lift performance
  • ⚠️ Possibility of sabotage – not ruled out

CCTV footage shows the plane climbing slightly and then descending tail-first before crashing. It hit the residential block during peak lunch hours.

🌐 International Attention & Controversy

India reportedly denied access to a UN aviation safety investigator, choosing to keep the investigation local under the AAIB. However, U.S. agencies like NTSB and GE Aerospace (the engine maker) are assisting in analyzing technical data.

The decision to refuse external observation sparked debate over investigation transparency and accountability.
